MST and MedTech Twente Give the Women & Children's Centre an Innovation Boost

MST and MedTech Twente Give the Women & Children’s Centre an Innovation Boost

On 24 September, 40 participants gathered for the very first MST Demo Day. Six companies pitched solutions addressing three specific innovation needs identified by the Women & Children’s Centre. These ranged from wireless monitoring of newborns’ vital signs to smart electric drive wheels designed to reduce the physical strain on nurses when moving heavy hospital beds. The most promising solutions will soon move forward into a follow-up implementation and development phase.

From Vision to Implementation in Five Steps

Together with DE DESIGN (concept and design agency), Saxion (knowledge institution), and Vintura (consultancy firm), MST and MedTech Twente developed a new innovation pathway. The Women & Children’s Centre was the first department to complete the five-step process:

  1. Identifying challenges and innovation needs.
  2. Defining a future vision.
  3. Selecting technological solution directions.
  4. Scouting companies for the Demo Day.
  5. Implementing suitable innovations.

The first four steps were completed in just four months. The process has now moved into step 5. Rita Grob, Department Manager of the Women & Children’s Centre, explains:

“It is fantastic to see how this process, together with MedTech Twente, acted as a catalyst for turning innovation into practice. During the MST Demo Day, I saw how professionals from healthcare, innovation, and technology got to know each other better, making collaboration on future innovations much easier. It is also great that several solutions presented by participating companies will now be implemented after they had the opportunity to gain firsthand insight into our daily practice.”

Scaling Across More MST Departments

The MST Innovation Lab is now rolling out this approach to other departments. This will enable more teams to benefit from innovative solutions that address today’s challenges while supporting tomorrow’s vision of healthcare.

Jarno Visser, Innovation Manager at MST, adds:

“Throughout this process, we pragmatically searched for a methodology that enables healthcare professionals to actively prepare for the future and translate that into practical challenges and solutions for today. This first project has shown that we can connect those two perspectives, with healthcare professionals acting as the crucial link. The experience gained within the Women & Children’s Centre has provided us with a scalable blueprint that our innovation advisors can now apply across other departments.”

A Unique Opportunity

Sabine Ligtvoet, Product Specialist at Bambi Medical, shares her experience of the MST Demo Day:

“MST offered us a unique opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue with various disciplines within the hospital in an efficient and highly effective way. For me, it was an inspiring and valuable experience.”

Bert Nijendijk, Project Manager at MedTech Twente, adds:

“Our goal is to bring companies and healthcare organizations closer together. The MST Demo Day proved to be an excellent way to achieve that. It’s great to see this format now being expanded both within and beyond MST.”
