VaxChip

The cross-border partners, NYtor, Lionix and Vaxxinova recently completed a feasibility study of a new molecular diagnostic tool called VaxChip. The study was conducted with support of ROCKET. This European project stimulates companies in the EU region to use nanotechnology, photonics and other key enabling technologies to develop new products. Dr. Han Zendman shares his experience on the project and gives us an insight in their promising technique.

In food security, produced vaccines in poultry need to be tested carefully, in order to confirm the right concentrations of viruses and bacteria. Also, the ‘purity’ is crucial, not allowing adventitious agents, possibly harming the effectiveness or safety of the vaccines.

“These are the main challenges we strive to solve in our Rocket project,” says Dr. Han Zendman, representing Nijmegen based company NYtor. “Together with Lionix (Enschede) and Vaxxinova (Münster) we want to develop an innovative molecular diagnostic tool able to perform multiple tests, detecting an array of pathogens in just one go. Our patented molecular beacon technology – developed and made ready for application by founder Jacqueline Vet – lies at the basis of this approach.”

Ecosystem support

The European project ROCKET is stimulating companies in the EU region to use nanotechnology, photonics and other key enabling technologies to develop new products.

“The beauty of the project is that it brings together different worlds to form a complete chain,” Egbert van Hattem of Novel-T Smart explains enthusiastically. “Companies in the manufacturing industry that reach a technological impasse or are looking for specific expertise might not be able to find the solution within the Netherlands, but perhaps can among German companies. With our German project partners, we bring these competencies together and create new opportunities. This creates a cross-border network with a high number of high-tech SMEs.”
