MedTech Twente is the innovation cluster where medical technology is accelerated. Here, businesses and health care institutions work closely together with researchers from the knowledge institutes to invent innovations for the health care of the future. Innovations are being developed, validated and implemented in close collaboration with parties, facilitated and accelerated by supporting organizations such as Novel-T, Oost NL, TechMed Centre | University of Twente, Kennispark Twente, World Trade Center Twente, Saxion University of Applied Sciences en Health Valley Netherlands. It’s also not surprising that successful MedTech companies such as Demcon, Medspray, Micronit, Lipocoat and IamFluidics were founded and grown in Twente.

A better and affordable health care
Within the high tech region Twente, a strong Life Sciences & Health topcluster is formed. The MedTech Twente cluster knows three substantive focal points:
- Nano Biotech (amongst which lab & organ-on-a-chip technology)
- Artificial Intelligence & E-health
- Health Robotics
Companies, knowledge institutions and health care institutions are working from MedTech Twente on a joint mission: better and affordable health care. In times of Covid-19 they have shown enormous development and effectiveness. This has resulted in a fertile ecosystem for innovations that make a significant contribution to tomorrow’s health care.
Twente has traditionally been known for its strong high-tech sectors, often based on research from knowledge institutions such as the University of Twente and Saxion University of Applied Sciences. The activity in the MedTech sector is growing rapidly, with frontrunners such as Demcon, Micronit, Baat Medical, Medspray and Benchmark. With numerous young growth companies in their wake such as ECSens, Vycap, Lipocoat, Flux Robotics, Uneedle, Flowbeams and Iamfluidics.
Improve the adoption of MedTech innovations in practice
For more than 15 years, partners in the ecosystem have been investing and working together to improve the adoption of medtech innovations in practice. This is visible in the curriculum of the knowledge institutions. The TechMed Center is also very important, located at the heart of the Kennispark Twente innovation campus. As a leading innovation hub, it supports innovation processes of companies and hospitals on an international scale.
The two top clinical hospitals in Twente, Roessingh Research & Development and a number of other health care institutions, are working together on a project basis on health care innovation under the name Vital Twente. Within the Technologie Zorg Academie (TZA), the focus of collaborating health care institutions is on awareness, adoption and acceptance of health care innovations. The MedTech Twente hub is strongly connected to health care network of Health Valley Netherlands, which is controlled from the east of the Netherlands.
